Canceromachy is a project about living with cancer, understanding it, and finding ways to keep moving forward. I share practical information based on what I have learned through my own experience, while also using Greek mythology to explore fear, hope, medicine, creativity, and the strange realities of life with serious illness. Along the way, I am writing Canceromachy: The Epic Battle Against Cancer, a story that I hope will eventually become a book.
The Story Behind Canceromachy
Canceromachy grew from my experience living with metastatic colorectal cancer and trying to understand everything that suddenly became part of my life.
I had already started learning about Greek mythology before cancer, but after my diagnosis it became a way to get my mind off everything that was happening. Instead, I found that mythology actually helped me make sense of it. To me, the Greek gods were a way of giving form to the forces of nature, feelings, emotions, and experiences that can otherwise be difficult to explain. The healing light of the sun became Apollo. The changing seasons reflected the story of Demeter and Persephone. Inspiration belonged to the Muses. Even emotions like Hope and Fear had faces and names. Mythology also gave me a way to visualize the cellular battle happening on a microscopic scale.
I thought that simply telling my cancer story exactly as it happened might be boring. But if I could tell it as an epic adventure, with gods, monsters, battles, fear, hope, and everything else that came with it, maybe people would actually want to read it.
Hence, Canceromachy.

Canceromachy brings together subjects that require very different standards of evidence. Medical information should not be treated like personal experience. A modern symbolic interpretation should not be presented as ancient Greek belief. Original Canceromachy mythology should never be disguised as historical tradition.
